Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV, grew up a Navy brat whose father died when he was ten. Magnum entered the Naval Academy at age 18 and became a third generation Naval officer. After the academy, he became a Navy SEAL and was deployed to Vietnam. While on active duty, Magnum made two life-long friends; Theodore "TC" Calvin and Orville "Rick" Wright.
After serving in the Vietnam war, Magnum transferred to Naval Intelligence and was stationed in Pearl Harbor. At the age of 33, Magnum woke up one morning and realized he was never 23. He resigned from the Navy, got a PI license, and opened business in Hawaii. He was eventually hired by a world-renowned author and playboy, Robin Masters, to monitor security at Robin's Nest, a huge estate on the north shores of Oahu.
Robin's Nest is overseen by Jonathan Quayle Higgins III an Englishman. Higgins also has a military background, having served in the Royal Army as a Sergeant Major. Magnum lives in the guest house on the estate and is allowed to drive Robin's Ferrari. Despite a someone contentious relationship, both Magnum and Higgins have a great fondness and respect for each other.
The series ran for 8 seasons, from 1980 until 1988, and follows Magnum on his various adventures involving clients, guests staying on the estate, or plots involving the Navy and his days in Vietnam. These adventures occasionally require assistance from his friends TC, Rick and Higgins.
