Arrow is a television series shown on The CW and developed by writer/producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg. It is based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp.
The series premiered on The CW in October 2012. The series follows billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) who, five years after being stranded on a hostile island, returns home to fight crime and corruption as a vigilante whose weapon of choice is a bow and arrow. Although the Oliver Queen/Green Arrow character had been featured in Smallville from 2006 to 2011, the producers decided to start clean and find a new actor.
Throughout the entire first season, Oliver Queen's vigilante alter-ego is never actually referred to as The Green Arrow, but rather goes by such obscure titles as "the green hooded guy", "the vigilante", or some combination thereof. Only once is "Green Arrow" suggested and Oliver dismisses the suggestion as "lame". It's not until midway into season 2 that the name The Arrow appears.
As of 2015, Arrow is the CW's highest-rated new series in five years, has completed three seasons, and has been renewed for a fourth. The third season premiered in October 2014 with a spin-off series set in the same universe titled The Flash, that aired in October 2014. A second spinoff, Legends of Tomorrow, is currently in development.
