After police officer Michael Arthur Long is nearly killed by a gunshot to the face, he's rescued by billionaire Wilton Knight. Knight gives Long a new face and a new identity as Michael Knight, the first agent in the billionaire's public justice organization called the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG).
Long, now Michael Knight, is paired with the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT) car, a heavily modified and technologically advanced Pontiac Firebird Trans Am controlled by a computer with artificial intelligence.
FLAG is headed by Devon Miles while Dr. Bonnie Barstow is the chief engineer in charge of KITT's care. The car used in the series was a customized 1982 Pontiac Trans-Am sports model that cost about $245,000 to build in 2014 dollars.
