The first season is set in Louisiana and follows Louisiana State Police homicide detectives Rustin "Rust" Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin "Marty" Hart (Harrelson) as they pursue a serial killer over the course of seventeen years.
True Detective was created by novelist Nic Pizzolatto. Featuring the music of T Bone Burnett and directed by Cary Fukunaga, the series begins in 1995 as Martin Hart and his Texas-born partner, Rust Cohle, are called to the scene of a gruesome, ritualistic killing of a young woman. Fast-forward to 2012, Hart and Cohle are grilled by another pair of detectives who are investigating a case that bears striking similarities to the one before. In between is a glimpse of 2002, when Hart and Cohle struggled to deal with their inner demons in separate but equally destructive ways.
The series was nominated for numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series and Golden Globe for Best Miniseries or Television Film.
